The FUJI ROCK documentary festival report Sequel

Thu, June 7-- BABA*BOOM in Takamatsu

The FUJI ROCK documentary festival tour that started at Shibuya Club Quattro finally lands in Shikoku, the smallest Japan's main island in the west. The club/bar "BABA*BOOM"placed in the middle of a long shopping center in Takamatsu City. The club is owned by the one and only master, who does not have much passion as a shop owner. But since the World Cup recently rose the spirits in the place, I expected the same atmosphere for the documentary festival. I entered with hope and excitement, but probably because it was a weekday there weren't many people.

Both female and male salaried workers (FUJI ROCK experts) on their way home slowly trickled into the place, and the documentary festival which started out very lonesome finally changed into a good atmosphere. I should not say this since I am from Shikoku, but ROCK is not the locals' favorite medium. While eating Sanuki Udon, I hoped that we could continue these promotion activities next year and the year after, and that the people from Shikoku would eventually start coming to FUJI ROCK in droves.

ドキュメンタリー祭 Fri, June 8-- DRUM LOGOS in Hakata

It was so quick to arrive at Hakata station from Okayama - only two and half hours. Instead of going directly to the hall, we stopped at FM GIGA in Hakata station. Mr. smiley Harashima who is known as the FUJI ROCK Green stage MC has his own live broadcast called "CROSS SMILEY FRIDAY" from 10:00 a.m till 4 p.m. - a 6 hour live broadcast! And Hidaka Taisho and Tubby were invited as guests. They are old acquaintances of Mr.Harashima since he played in a band called THE ACIDENTS in the MENTAI ROCK scene. When Taisho was on the radio, he made the announcement about the RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS changing the name to AKA TOGARASHI (meaning RHCP in Japanese) which should not be announced yet because it was still during the press ban. He dropped a bombshell, with apparently everyone knowing which band he was talking about.

After we filled our bellies with "original Nagahama ramen", we headed to the DRUM LOGOS hall. The door opened at 18:00. It was Friday night, and the place was pretty much full of visitors. After FRF'01 EXHIBITION was shown as an opener, Mr. smiley Harashima and Mr. Tubby from smash appeared. Mr. Tubby emphasized how the charge of a bus / airplane tour charges were lowered this time, compared with the transportation expenses from rural areas to Naeba. And then the documentary of FRF'01 began. The 2-hour film centered on a live images. Then the main event started :"Smiley Harashima vs SMASH Hidaka Taisho talk live".

It started with the memories of FUJI ROCK 01, and introduced this year's lineup day by day with highlights. During this, they talked about an astonishing episode that happened 10 years ago. When Billy Bragg and Taisho were pub-crawling in the amusement center of Hakata, they saw a familiar faced foreigner jogging towards them form the neon town. It was Paul Weller!

Last was a question/answer session with Hidaka Taisho. He asked if there is any other artist they want to see this year, then many requests came, such as Pantera, Beastie Boys, Basement Jaxx, and Ozzy Ozborne. The audience got louder, taking advantage of this opportunity to speak with Taisho. The scheduled session was for 30 minutes, but was actually extended to an hour or more. I'm sorry, LOGOS!

    ドキュメンタリー祭ドキュメンタリー祭

Under these circumstances, the Documentary festival of Fukuoka ended with success and arrived at the hotel in preparation for the next day.....not at all! After hanging around in center Kyushu, Taisho got into his stride. Adding some other Kyushu FRF participant, named as Yamgasa-kun, finally the group grew to 30 people, and with this energy they moved to the stall in front of Nomura Security building. And they decided to bring "Happotei" the Hakata street stall and open the booth at Naeba during FRF in the end.

Sat., June 15-- Shinsaibashi Club QUATTRO in Osaka

Shinsaibashi Club QUATTRO was the final stop on the "Documentary festival" national tour. There were 30 or more spectators have already lined at the QUATTRO’s front entrance at 17:00 of opening time- a first for the place. Finally the number grew to 400 and it was a success as a final event. Moreover, there about 30-40% of the attendees had already experienced Fuji Rock for themselves. When they saw the bands on film, they didn't need a teleprompter to name them. "This is definitely Cooper Temple Clause!," "No, it's MOGWAI, " they shouted back and forth. All the spectators shouted like stand-up Osaka comedians.

Although the Documentary festival began in a quiet mood, it didn't end so easy. They called a launch of a Documentary festival again, and went to a bar near Osaka Dome as they always do. It is the smash-rock bar "BIG CAKE". Of course Fuji rocker’s gathered one after another get a taste of the Documentary festival. Big Cake was packed and the air in Osaka was hot and steamy.

Thanks goes out to all the people who came to the FUJI ROCK Documentary festival from all over the country. I hope that those who found it interesting will participate in FUJI ROCK this year. FUJI ROCK is a very incredible event, as you can understand from looking at the film. It might be cheeky to say something like "back to nature" or "through music," but for us who works during the festival every year, you guys have whole free three days to enjoy music in mountainous Naeba and really really enviable. If you come to FUJI ROCK this year, please enjoy the festival as much as you can. The tickets aren't cheap, so you should enjoy every single part of the festival.
