Fuji Rock Documentary Festival in Sendai (5/23)

We started the ball rolling with the Fuji Rock Documentary Festival at Shibuya Club Quattro on May 9, showing how wicked Fuji Rock is by way of a kind of film concert. It was free to get in, and over 400 people turned up on the first day. To make sure no one missed out on the Documentary of Fuji Rock '01, featuring Oasis, Neil Young and Eminem, we organized for TV monitors to be set up in the lobby as well.

We also had shows in Nagoya and Hiroshima, with the fourth one arranged for Club SHAFT in Sendai. This is usually a club/sports bar, and the dude in charge, Carl from England, was even wearing the Japanese soccer uniform. We had a big screen in the middle of the dance floor, as well as more than 10 other TV monitors scattered around the club. People usually sit around and drink while watching soccer here, so the atmosphere was perfect.

Just after we opened at 6 o'clock, we started showing FRF '00 EXHIBITION. Although there was little live footage, the coverage of BLANKY JET CITY right at the end and the back-stage banter afterwards was truly something.

After that at 7 o'clock, we played the Documentary of Fuji Rock '01. Starting with the festivities the night before which most of the festival-goers on the first day haven't experienced (with a special appearance by Taisho himself, too!), the mix of live footage and documentary was just right, and the two hours flew by.

It was at this point that one slightly intoxicated person started calling for a repeat showing (there were quite a few drunk women there, too. Did you make it home OK?!), so we had a special showing of FUJI ROCK 97, which is now a legend. It only lasted a little over 15 minutes, but the footage of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the storm was unbelievable.

Yep, it's been six years since then and six years since I joined the Smash team, which has been great. Anyway, I hope that everyone that came to the show in Sendai will be fully prepared for possible rain this time around. At the end of the night, we all dined out on Harako Kamameshi, the famous cuisine of Sendai, and continued to have a few more drinks before we left town the next morning. All in all, a great time was had by all!
