DIrect Info on the line-up from Taisho!
Hello. This is Nob here. I recently heard some bad rumors getting around with this year's line-up, so I went to see Taisho today to ask what's going on these days in terms of the line-up.
*MUSE
I have a bad news. Muse, who will release their 2nd album soon and I've been looking forward to listening to some new songs from that on stage, pulled out of the festival. This is due to their promotional commitments of the new album that crushes the Fuji Rock Festival dates. It is very unusual to cancel their confirmed contract, and the band members really wanted to play the festival. However, after a discussion between Smash and the Muse's record company, the cancellation has been decided. Taisho said 'I'm sorry for those who bought the tickets after knowing Muse to play'.
*The drive-in will be open as usual.
The situation surrounding At The Drive-In seems not very good as the band announced that they would take a break from a record/tour/record/tour cycle. However, Taisho confirmed today that 'They will be definitely play at the Fuji Rock Festival '01.
*Patti Smith
WOW! What a great news! It's been confirmed by Taisho that the punk queen, Patti Smith will be play on the Green Stage on Saturday!! I can't wait to see her live! The official announcement will be made next week with other additional acts.
*The line-up of the Heaven and Red Marquee.
Taisho said 'We'll announce all together soon, but give me some more time'.
*An addition to the White Stage
According to Taisho, Autechre from the UK should be confirmed soon. Let's enjoy their experimental innovative techno music.
*Brian Eno
It's already been confirmed by the Smash's official HP, but it is another great news to hear that Brian Eno is coming to Fuji Rock '01! When he was in the Roxy Music, he was just there in the band without singing or playing many instruments, but he just couldn't be ignored. He was the first one to invent the ambient music. He is also famous for the Talking Heads, his work as a producer of U2 , and his 'NO NEW YORK' album which triggered the New York punk rock scene. He composed the Windows 95 starting sound (If you see the 'property', his name is on the credit). Radiohead's 'Kid A' is like a 21st century version of 'Another Greenworld' by Eno and he has such a great influence on today's rock, post-rock, and techno music. Therefore, with my personal interest, I asked Taisho about how Brian Eno had been decided to play FRF '01.
'The producer of the White Stage, Ray Haan, a friend of Eno had been asking Eno to play Fuji Rock. Then in March, Ray and Eno had a meeting and Eno decided to do a trio band, with strings, rhythm sections and some visual effects on a screen. The band only plays three shows, one in Naeba and two in Europe afterwards, so it's going to be a very rare performance. If you are old fans of the 70's glam rock, if you were shocked by his producing works in the 80's, and if you knew from 'Velvet Goldmine' which was produced by Eno, just wait for the moment!!
*Back to the 80's!?
New Order was added to this year's bill all of sudden. Taisho said 'I was informed about the band getting back to the scene again a while ago, so we just offered them to play'. About Echo & The Bunnymen, Taisho proposed them to play this year while having dinner with Ian. I'm not sure what and where they were eating.
*How 'bout new bands?
There are always some good new bands to see for the first time at Fuji Rock Festival. This year, we will have some up'n'coming bands from the UK and Australia at the Red Marquee tent. Taisho are thinking of offering two of three bands that he played the CDs of at the Ganban rock seminar. It's been mentioned by Taisho that MO SOLID GOLD are being under negotiation.
*Neil Young's favorite sisters.
Twin sisters, Tegan & Sare should be playing this year. I've got no idea about what their music is like, but they will release their debut album around the Fuji Rock Festival period.
This is all I talked with Taisho about today. There were some good news and some bad news, but what I'm feeling like... The Festival is just there and I am soooo excited even now!
If you have any questions or opinions, please do not hesitate to e-mail me or drop your message on the BBS. I'll see what I can do for the next scoop.
