--Music in the Mist: The Asagiri Odyssey--Part8--Tokyo Calling"
People had begun packing up so that after Joe Strummer, the festival's final performance, they could jump right into the car and be on their way out of this misty utopia and back into the real world. But Strummer, wasn't letting everyone off so easily. His band was there to rock, and as they began to play, those left taking down their tents dropped what they were doing to dance in the mist. He and his band, the Mescaleros, put out their best effort, playing a string of Clash classics ("Rudie Can Not Fail", "I Fought the Law"), as well as his work with the Mescaleros.
By the time their set finished, the sun had set and the clouds had rolled in. Strummer thanked everyone for braving the elements, but to be honest, it wasn't much of a challenge. With the great music and even better vibes, a little rain dampened no one's mood.
After Strummer's set, I stuffed my portable wardrobe back in the van and drove it home. Will I bring as much stuff next year? Perhaps, but I now know that no matter the weather, I'll be back, for sure. The Asagiri Jam can claim a new advocate.
