    "Jamaican History 101"

    Asagiri Jam

Next up was Laurel Aitken, who swaggered into the spotlight. Known as "the Godfather of Ska", Aitken has been credited with introducing Jamaican music to the UK. in the '50s. Aitken was the first to tell us this, for those who didn't already know. His set was sprinkled with commentary on the history of Jamaican music and his part in it.

"I know most of you can speak English," he began, "This music that we're playing was the Jamaican pop of the fifties".

Asagiri Jam And thus began our reggae lesson. First up was "Boogie in My Bones", Aitken's first single in Britain way back in 1958. By this time the crowd had filled out. Everyone had by now arrived and set up appropriately for the weekend. They were now ready to make a splash - literally. What had once looked like marshland was now packed with revelers grinning and hopping through the muck.

Aitken's backup band, the Blue Beat Players, strode effortlessly through classics like "Charlie Brown" and the rock steady number, "Zion City". The fog began to lift as Aitken broke out his harmonica to the hoops and howls of the crowd.
