FRF '99 Green Stage
Pronounced oo-ahh [1999.7.31 16:49]
UA, which does not stand for United Artists, carries two formidable burdens at this year's festival. She is 1) the only representative of so-called J-pop, and 2) the only female solo artist who's appearing the whole weekend. She's also perhaps the mellowest, a distinction that most people at the festival couldn't care less about; unless those people happen to be her fans, and there were quite few on hand. "You better watch your back," one of the American security guys told me before the show as I took my position in the camera pit. "Don't worry," I said, "there won't be any moshing." The team had a chance to relax.
The MC introduced her rather presumptuously as "the queen of our era." Dressed in a linen top open at the sides and sporting enough makeup to open a Max Factor outlet, UA opened her set with a lover's rock version of Carol King's "I Feel the Earth Move." The set never picked up speed from there, but rather maintained a stately, slightly psychedelic vibe that pleased the fans to no end.
