FRF '99 White Stage

Make that a regular... [1999.7.30 16:39]

England's Regular Fries made their Japan debut under skies that had quickly grown overcast and in air that had become quite muggy. Dressed in military fatigues of all configurations (the guitarist, however, opted for a simple short-sleeved shirt with a sergeant's chevron over his heart), the 7-piece band immediately set up an incorruptible groove as the two lead singers threw handfuls of Regular Fries funny money into the White Stage crowd (owing to a headwind, however, most of it landed in the pit).

"Better be a monkey if you're like King Kong," the band sang over a repetitive boom-box and synth pattern that convinced a lot of people that this could be the band that would take off where the Happy Mondays left off -- except that Happy Mondays are back (and will close out the White Stage on Sunday night). Each song built on a foundation of keyby sounds that rippled and crashed as the two lead singers, looking no worse for the heat despite their hefty khaki jackets, jumped around the stage. The mysterious-looking sampler and keyboard player, parked behind a camoflaged instrument with large, lit incense sticks protruding from the top, looked happy to be in Asia. Or maybe he just likes burning things.
