FRF '99 White Stage

Mishka makes friends [1999.8.1 13:02]

Mishka, who was born in Bermuda and, legend has it, grew up on a sailboat, probably wasn't fazed at all by the blistering noonday sun on the White Stage today, though he might have had some trouble with the breeze, which picked up clouds of dust and sent them sailing into the stage. Still, he looked pretty mellow, and so did the crowd. A bunch of hearty sorts danced languorously in place clutching bottles of red wine, and though it was by no means a big audience and people had plenty of room to shuffle. Mishka tends to downplay his vocal resemblance to Bob Marley, but the source of those tight emotional high notes is unmistakable. Still, it's the songs that seemed to impress the audience. Closer in emotional timbre to the self-deprecating love epics of Jackson Browne than to the bawdier stuff Marley was famous for, Mishka's songs nevertheless tap a even remoter influence. One could hear the clear gospelish fervor of Sam Cooke in a song called "Give You All the Love I've Got." There was not a rock song in the set, but you could sense a firm emotional bond between artist and audience and though most of the people probably didn't know these songs, each one concluded with genuinely warm applause. The songs are, to put it bluntly, beautiful. Mishka is probably the least starlike singer I've seen at this festival so far. He's just a nice guy who has a way with a tune, and the audience loved him for it -- at first sight.
