FRF '99 Green Stage

Tender is the night [1999.7.31 23:06]

These glamorously disheveled lads shuffle into the spotlight and without hesitation you realize you're the presence of Rock Stars, shining oh so brightly on this clear-skied night. Oh, and did I mention the goose pimples? Somehow I forget that this is a job and I'm supposed to battle it out with the giant telephoto cannons and then shovel it up onto the Web. But somebody's gotta do it.

Daman Alburn is, of course, properly clean cut, wearing his trademark clunky frames, Graham Coxon poses center stage revealing a healthy stubble, and Alex James, plucking an upright bass for the opener, puffs uncaring on a quickly burning cig. He doesn't seem aware of the fact that he's standing on a stage in the middle of the Niigata mountains. Coxon, however, knows exactly where he is, bowing deeply to the audience before the begins.

''Tender'' was the opener, soothing us with their most basic love song and suddenly all the angst and thrashing about in the hot sun is a distant memory.

Minus the orchestration it was pared down to its acoustic basics and simple chorus.

And then there was ''Coffee and TV,'' again more love letters and more goose pimples.

But what more is there to say? You know the story of rock 'n' roll glory. They rock so brilliantly, on everything from ''Beetlebum'' to ''Girls and Boys.'' And now they're ripping another hole in the sky with ''Song 2.''

Needless to say, you're so great and we love you.
