FRF '99 Field Of Heaven
Phish Phly [1999.7.31 20:55]
Except for maybe Rage, the band that most people seem to have come to see is Phish, who played a 50-minute set on the Green Stage early Friday and are commanding the Fields of Heaven every night of the festival from 7:00 to 11:00. "It's a great stage, the best I think," guitarist Trey Anastasio told me between sets of their Saturday night show. "I mean we're really lucky. The audiences have been unbelievable." Trey says they jumped at the chance to play the unprecedented three-night gig. "We've never been to Japan before, so this is something really special, something we've been wanting to do for a long time." Given the jam-based music that Phish is phamous for, doesn't three nights in a row take something out of you, especially after travelling all the way from New England just two days ago? "Last night I was a little tired, but tonight it's been great. I'm really enjoying playing." Which may explain why the band is only taking a 20-minute rather than the allowed 30-minute intermission. Friday night, they took a little longer to check out Rage themselves. "Did you see them," Trey enthuses, "they're really incredible." Does he plan anything special for the last night. "No, but you never know what will happen." It might, he implies, be the best performance of their lives.
