Eastern Youth: Dressed for success [1999.7.31 19:03]
If Hi-Standard proves that Japanese punk can deserve to be held up to the international big boys, Eastern Youth, who sings all their songs in Japanese, makes a pretty strong case that Japanese punk may actually be the world standard. Kamiya-san, the egghead-looking lead guitarist, commented that Limp Bizkit was about to start over on the Green Stage and that they had caused quite a ruckus at Woodstock, the implication being that this crowd of Eastern Youthers could definitely give them a run for their money in terms of ruckus-making (but, thankfully, no burning or looting). Yamada-san, the bassman with the most unassuming punim in punk and a wardrobe straight out of K-Mart, said nothing, but when the group blasted off his fingers flew into a rage.
Kamiya loses whatever unassuming appearance he possesses when he sings, neck cords bulging and teeth gleaming out of a death's head grimace. The crowd barrelled over the barriers and since the White Stage has a narrower camera pit, the security team had quite a time picking the surfers out of the morass. They screamed in unison along with their faves. Eastern Youth isn't limited to punk. Like Hi-Standard, they leaven their crunch with a bit of melodic hard rock that serves lyrics of an extremely personal -- and painful -- nature. They are the real thing, punk with a soul and a brain. Even if they don't dress like it.
